Rights for urban children

Meeting the rights and requirements of urban children in the South, in the context of rapid social change and limited resources, is the issue at the centre of the new handbook, entitled Cities for Children : Children's Rights, Poverty and Urban Management produced by UNICEF and Earthscan and written by Sheridan Bartlett, Roger Hard, David Satterthwaite, Ximena de la Barra, and Alfredo Missair. The 300 page handbook (£18.95) starts with an overview of children's issues and in particular the rights of the child and children's development. The book then goes on to provide guidelines, recommendations and examples on how to address children's needs in a variety of situations. The final section looks at systems of governance that can promote economic security, social justice and environmental care that will support the promotion of children's rights. The book includes a substantial list of publications and relevant organisations. Earthscan Email: earthinfo@earchscan.co.uk IIED Fax: + 44 (0) 171 388 2826.
